First Response Emergency Care (FREC 3)

Course overview

 

This informative, hands-on 5-day course fulfils the competencies set out in the PHEM skills framework at descriptor level D, providing the knowledge and practical skills needed to deal with a range of prehospital emergency care situations.

This course covers administration of emergency oxygen, management of trauma patients, major illnesses and much more. Participants will learn how to handle complex injuries, medical conditions, and life-threatening emergencies. The Level 3 award in First Response Emergency Care is a perfect fit for those looking to work or volunteer as a first responder.


Course Duration: 5 day course (approximately 35 hours)


Course Highlights:

  • Review of basic first aid principles and legal considerations
  • Primary and secondary surveys for assessing casualties
  • Be able to assess and manage patients with life-threatening and nonlife-threatening illness and injuries
  • Recognition and management of airway and breathing emergencies
  • Management of an unresponsive patient who is not breathing normally
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for adults, children, and infants
  • Automated external defibrillator (AED) use and integration into CPR
  • Administration of emergency oxygen
  • Assessment and management of trauma patients and management of catastrophic bleeding
  • Assessment and management of a patient with compromised circulation
  • Emergency care for a patient with head, spinal and musculoskeletal injuries
  • Practical hands-on exercises, simulations, and case studies

 Learners must be at least 17 years old on the first day of the training and be able to perform practical tasks at floor level. 


There are no other formal entry requirements but we strongly recommend that Learners have a minimum of Level 1 in literacy and numeracy or equivalent.
